'Save A Couch - Adopt A Dane!'

"To his dog, every man is king; hence the constant popularity of dogs."
- Aldus Huxley

                                        CODA

Coda is a 3 year old black male with natural ears and white markings. Coda is your typical couch potato dane -- well he doesn't actually sleep on the couch. He actually prefers a nice dog bed strategically placed in the room with all the people. During his naps he will get up several times to get some lovin'. If its a good time for you to give him some attention he'll hang out and take as many pets as you'll give him. If its not a good time for you, you can tell him to go lay back down, and he will. Coda prefers to be the one to initiate attention from his people. Coda knows his basic commands (sit, lay down, paw, come, go lay down) and will go in his crate on command. Given his laziness and from the good house manners seen in his foster home, he may not need to be crated unless he is in a home alone with another uncrated dog. He does not like to stay in his crate without a doggie companion close by, but will only whine for a few minutes. His foster home thinks that he could go to a home with or without another doggie companion. Coda does not like hyper dogs that are in his face. He will be vocal about expressing his dislike but has never gone past getting vocal. He has been patient in repeatedly telling his foster sister to stay out of his face, and once he has made his point he will get up and move away without further confrontation. His new family should understand that he wants you to hear what he has to say. We were told that Coda can be slow to warm up to men, but we have not seen those behaviors since coming into his foster home. He actually prefers to get attention from his foster dad when he has an option. However, just like with other dogs, Coda does not like people who are too much in his face and he will grumble about it. For this reason, he should not be placed with young children. Coda is an absolute love bug who will keep you laughing with his new found interest in toys. He quickly gets attached to his family but is not an over the top Velcro dane. He will be a wonderful addition to the right family. Coda came to MAGDRL in February 2008.

                                                      COOPER

Cooper is a 3 1/2 year old fawn male with natural ears. He came to rescue because he was not getting along with the other male Dane in the home, and was involved in an incident with the death of the family cat. He did get along with the other dogs in the home. Cooper needs some work on socialization and leash skills. He's been a quick study so far, so his foster Mom will continue to work with him. Cooper came to MAGDRL in January 2008.

Update 2/20/08 - Cooper recently got very sick. It turns out that he has megaesophagus and is currently fighting aspiration pneumonia. We are also waiting on test results from possible myasthenia gravis and thyroid. Cooper has lost a lot of weight and is working on getting his strength back. At this time we aren't sure what kind of long term care will be needed other than keeping the aspiration pneumonia at bay. His eating habits will have to change; eating with his front elevated, no soft foods and small, frequent meals. The medication to combat the aspiration pneumonia is very expensive and Cooper will have to go back to the doctor at the end of the week for additional x-rays to ensure his medication is working.
